Rugby Borough Council
The borough comprises the town of Rugby where the council has its headquarters, and the rural areas surrounding the town. The borough has a population of just over 100,000 and of these over 70,000 live in the town of Rugby, with the remainder living in the surrounding rural areas.
Rugby holds the unique position as the birthplace of rugby football and, as you would expect, many of the town’s attractions stir the passions of sporting enthusiasts. The town offers a pilgrimage for those who want to immerse themselves in the history, culture and development of the game.
Just as the railways disrupted the pattern of the countryside in the nineteenth century, so did the motorway network in the twentieth with the arrival of the M1, M6 and M45, virtually surrounding the town on three sides. New housing developments at Hillmorton and to the south west of Rugby at Thurlaston and Dunchurch threaten to complete the circle.
